As we moved around near Yala Hetti referred a couple of times to the events of the tsunami of 26 December 2004. I have decided to put all the comments etc about this here.
He was at a Yala resort owned by Jetwings on the day and was supposed to leave with clients at 8:30. They were late so he didn't leave until 9:00. The resort was wiped out at 9:20. He pointed out where he was at 9:20 and commented that shortly thereafter the water got there, washing a couple of fishing boats about 500m into rice paddys.
Several staff and guests at the resort were killed.
On his trip on the day Hetti was following a normal route and was told to go inland as the road was blocked. Only later did he find the reason why.
One of his colleagues was on a safari with clients and, as usual had breakfast on the beach. As they were leaving the guide looked in his mirror and saw a 6m high wall of water crashing over the breakfast area. One guide and 12 Japanese tourists were killed at this point. That is the location of the memorial of which a couple of images follow.
Presumably the wiped-out resort mentioned above is the one referred to towards the bottom of the page for Yala resort.
